Curriculum vitae Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. Peter Kindler, University of Munich

Peter Kindler, born in 1960, studied law at the University of Munich, the London School of Economics and the Hague Academy of International Law from 1980-1985, when he passed his first state examination. From 1985-1988 he completed his practical legal training at various German courts and authorities and lawyers in Germany and in Italy. During the same period he was a part-time assistant at the Munich Faculty of Law (Institute for International Law). He obtained his Ph.D. in 1987 in Munich (Dr. iur.).

After passing the second state examination in 1988, he became a Member of the German bar in Munich, practising International Business Law as a lawyer. In 1991 he took a position as academic assistant at the Konstanz Faculty of Law, where he was appointed Lecturer in 1995 (Dr. iur. habil.). Since 1994 he is involved in research and lecturing in the field of private international law and commercial law at various Italian universities (Camerino, Campobasso, Ferrara, Genoa, Milan, Naples, Padua, Rome, Urbino, Venice, Verona). In early 1996 he was appointed Professor of Private and Business Law at the Heidelberg Law Faculty. In November 1996 he was appointed Professor of Private and Commercial Law, Private International Law, Comparative Law, at the Bochum Law Faculty (Germany). Since 1995 he has also been regularly teaching German company law (in English) at the Faculty of Law of Nijmegen / The Netherlands in the ambit of the PALLAS Consortium which offered a one-year LL.M Advanced European Business Law programme. The programme was located at the University of Essex (UK) under the responsibility of Prof. Sheldon Leader until 2010. In December 2012 Professor Kindler taught European Business Law – including private international law and international civil litigation – at La Trobe University in Melbourne/Australia in the ambit of an LL.M. programme organized by Professor Gordon Walker.

In 1999 Prof. Kindler was elected secretary general of the German-Italian Lawyers’ association and he became member of the board of regular contributors to the monthly “Recht der Internationalen Wirtschaft” (International Business Law), one of the most important German periodicals in the field of conflict of laws and foreign commercial law. Kindler is a board member of several Italian legal journals:

  • member of the academic board (Comitato scientifico) of “Banca, borsa, titoli di credito” (leading in the field of Italian and European business law),
  • member of the evaluation committee (comitato di valutazione) of “Rassegna di diritto civile” (leading in the field of Italian and European private law),
  • member of the evaluation committee (comitato di valutazione scientifica) of “Rivista di diritto civile” (leading in the field of Italian and European private law).
  • member of the comitato dei referee of "Osservatorio del diritto civile e commerciale" (leading in the field of Italian private and commercial law)

Kindler is also a member of the Academy of European Private Lawyers (http://www.accademiagiusprivatistieuropei.it/giusprivatisti.it).

From 2002 to 2004 Kindler was Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Bochum. From 2004 to 2006 he was a member of the Working Group on Private International Law related to Companies of the German Department of Justice (Deutscher Rat für Internationales Privatrecht).1

Peter Kindler is a member of the German Institution of Arbitration (www.dis-arb.de) and since 2006 he serves both in ad hoc and institutional arbitrations. Besides German (his mother tongue), he speaks English and Italian. From 2007 to September 2011 Kindler held a Chair of Private and Business Law, Private International Law, Comparative Law, at the Augsburg Law Faculty. Since October 2011 he holds the Chair for Private and Business Law, Private International Law, Comparative Law, at the Munich Law Faculty, Institute for International Law (www.peter-kindler.de). In April 2017, the Università degli Studi del Molise (Italy) conferred the degree of doctor honoris causa upon him.

Professor Kindler is author of more than 130 books and articles. His publications (since 1986) focus on Business Law and Private International Law.
